Labor: Labor and Delivery

  • July 20, 1999
6:37am: The Pitocin has been administered for about 40 minutes. Unfortunately, it took the nurses 5 tries to get the IV in correctly, so our day started at 5:00 am. Throughout the night, most of the contractions had subsided, but the Pitocin start things anew. 8:56am: Contractions are more noticeable, but Mom is doing OK.
10:50am:  Crystal's water breaks (taco!). We're now down to at least 24 hours.. 10:50am: Part of Team Samantha (Grandma's Joan and Johnnie) discussed strategy for the day.
1:25pm:  Contractions 2 minutes apart, no drugs yet. Dr. Hardart examined her around 12:20 and estimated her at 3-4 cm. Things are progressing fine. 3:11pm:  Stadol administered around 20 mins prior. Pain relieved, contractions 1 minute apart. 4-5 cm.
5:10pm: Trying to sleep between the contractions and nurse visits to check her blood pressure. Crystal says, "Won't be long now" 7:31pm: Everyone sings the praises of ice cold pop sickles. Hallelujah! Any red flavor will do, but no grape. Crystal is 7-8 cm dilated. Crystal says, "Won't be long now"
8:38pm: Dr. Smith (Pappy Lou) arrives just off the Chattanooga Express. He inspects the IV areas first attempted by the nurses and confers with the his patient. 8:50pm: The rest of Team Samantha (Kim and Cheryl). Dilation around 8-9cm. Tony is in the waiting room looking for a ball game. We all missed the Orioles game this night, but they did win in honor of our new arrival.
9:30pm: Crystal's been feeling the urge to push for about 15 minutes as the contractions are getting very intense. The second dose of Stadol has long worn off. We're waiting for the doctor to show from another delivery. After spending several hours trying to get the contractions monitor to register the contractions, the doctor inserted an internal monitor. Crystal was now getting credit for the contractions. Baby's heart beat looks great.  10:26pm: The final push. The doctor and nurses were ready for delivery to begin around 10:10pm. We had push first past a small amount of the cervix still not dilated. Once that occurred...
10:30pm: And then she's here.

10:40pm: Samatha getting cleaned up. 10:45:pm: Weighing in at 7 lbs 5.4 oz.
10:40pm: Mom, Dad and baby check each other out. A happy Mom and Dad celebrate.
10:50pm: The rest of team Samantha gets to come and see the fruits of their labor.
